Good fic and, *breathes sigh of relief* I'm always a little weirded out when I see mention of Maori culture or mythology in fic, but this was just fine! :D
Family group is ok for Iwi, but it's more just 'Tribe', your family group is your Hapu (some Hapu are larger than some small Iwi), and your family is your Whanau. If you wanted to throw more words in there, the spiral = Koru. And heh, yeah - the Maori have only been called the Maori for about 200 years, to distinguish from the Europeans & everyone else, because it just means 'ordinary'. Umm. Ok, sorry for the excited culture-geeking. Maori is just one small part of my Whakapapa (ancestry), but I'm proud of it. ;)
