Oh my god, so much love for this story. So unexpected, but so welcomed! Thank you so much for tackling one of my prompts. If the consolation is a fic written by my favorite author then it was worth not getting a fic in the first place.... if that makes sense...
The Impala was gone. That could have meant anything, so Dean didn't even pause. This line just killed me. It says so much. Dean's looking for Sam and he doesn't even hesitate when he sees the car is gone. And there's just something about the words and how they fit together that just jumps off the screen.
"Car," he said, reduced to monosyllables while he tried to understand that the thing had his brother.
Please God, don't let Sam look at me like that, ever.
Dean wanted to say hey, what do you think, he's going to kill him if he hasn't already but he stayed quiet because she didn't deserve his panic and he couldn't stand to hear the words aloud. Dean's internal thoughts/struggle is wonderful, heartbreaking and so Dean. And how he goes from all this to the shutting down, amazing.
Then to Sam, constantly making the distinction: That quick, it was straddling his back and leaning its weight (not Dean's weight, he couldn't think of it like that, not Dean, not Dean) on his shoulders and driving the breath out of him.
"He's not 'simply put together', you fuck," Sam said through his teeth. God, how he hated listening to Dean's laugh coming out of that thing. So much love for this! Sam, alternately pissed off and repelled, but defending Dean.
no play in the wheel. Amazing, your use of words, just amazing.
It hadn't made it past all of the superficial layers he wore to keep the rain off. This is just perfect, excellent Dean-logic.
"Look away, Sam," .... Some things Dean just could not do with Sam's attention on him...Sam was every bright and healthy thing his mind didn't have room for right then, Sam would clear his head, Sam would make him incapable of destruction. Yes, yes, a million times yes. How Dean feels about Sam in a nutshell.
I had to stop myself from italicizing the whole ending... Dean's reaction, and Sam's reaction to that reaction... perfect. Just, thank you so much. A week and a day left of this school year with all the attendant last minute work, and this put the biggest damn smile on my face. You are awesome.
